The collaboration
Hi everyone,
My niece, Madison, age 7, called me last summer and asked if I would make a quilt with her. I was very touched and said sure, I would. Then she lowered the boom. “I want it to be just like the one in my reader.” Humm? Apparently, there is a story in the McGraw-Hill 2nd grade reader about a little Hawaiian girl who makes a quilt with her grandmother. Madison decided we should make the same quit, copying the design from the illustration in the story, “Luka’s Quilt”. It took a few months but with Madisons help, we managed a pretty good approximation of the design.
The quilt was shown in the “Christmas on the Grand” celebration at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum from November ’08 to Jan. ’09. Originally, Madison wanted to use this on her bed in the room she shares with her twin sister, Mackenzie, but I think her dad has convinced her to display it, since it has been shown in a museum. Here you see a few shots of the progression of putting the quilt together and then the comparison of the illustrated quilt and our version of it.
I will have this quilt on display at my Open Studio event on Saturday, February 14th, from 1-4 p.m. Hope you can make it.
